latest and greatest
Since July 2007, I’ve been working for a small nonprofit based in SanFrancisco, called GreenInfo Network. Though my background is in geography and geology/paleontology, over the past several years, I’ve become more and more interested in web and user interface development, especially as it relates to maps and all things geographic.
Here is a small sampling of projects I’ve completed in the past couple of years.
North American Environmental Atlas (2010)
The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) has developed numerous GIS layers and maps that are available to download through the North American Environmental Atlas. I built the online version of this atlas using several open source APIs and software options, including the OpenLayers Mapping API, MapTiler/GDAL2Tiles, as well as the Google Earth Plugin API. The interface includes a map view and a 3D Google Earth view.
Monuments: Diversity, Democracy and Freedom (2009)
This map and table application was completed for The City Project, a nonprofit based in Los Angeles that is dedicated to achieving “equal justice, democracy, and livability for all”. The application utilizes the Google Maps API and Google Visualization API.
Bay Area Open Space Council website (2009)
The Bay Area Open Space Council needed a website that they could easily update. Using the graphic design provided by their consultant, I created a sort of custom wiki based on PHP/MySQL that allows Council staff to login and add/edit data as they need. The site includes a file uploader and WYSIWYG editor.
Reef Check California Diver Portal and Map Viewer (2008)
Reef Check California (RCCA) is a nonprofit that coordinates dives to monitor reef health in California waters. Prior to this new web application, divers entered their findings (hundreds of observations) into Excel spreadsheets, which were then compiled by RCCA staff and prepared for analysis. The new diver portal steamlines this process and allows divers to enter their data online, where staff can then review and sign off on the data in a matter of minutes. The map viewer displays this data and was my very first OpenLayers and PHP project.
